Winemaker Notes
Pietrarossa is a single-vineyard selection from Contucci, sourced from a distinct parcel in Montepulciano characterized by red, iron-rich soils — the “red stone” that gives the wine its name. This cru sits at a slightly different elevation and exposure compared to the vineyards used for the estate’s Vino Nobile, resulting in a more defined and structured expression of Prugnolo Gentile. The 2021 vintage was harvested by hand, fermented with care to preserve varietal precision, and aged in large oak casks, following Contucci’s traditional approach. Compared to the base Nobile, Pietrarossa shows greater depth and focus, shaped by the character of this specific site rather than by blending across multiple parcels.
The Story
The Contucci family has ties to winemaking since the year 1015 (correct, no typo) - some 42 generations have put a touch on the wine they make. They are one of the historic names of the town, and that continuity shapes everything they do. In the centuries that have passed, they have always followed a continuum in their traditional style, meanwhile watching everyone jump on the newest, latest and greatest trend, only to come back to where they always stayed. Pietrarossa reflects the clay-rich soils that define Vino Nobile territory. Contucci has always leaned traditional and surely always will. Large casks, patience, and respect for Sangiovese’s natural structure. The 2021 carries that classical frame. It has firmness and length rather than gloss. We’re drawn to producers like Contucci because they represent real Tuscany. This wine feels connected to centuries of viticulture, not to a recent trend cycle that is going to be obsolete in time.
