Winemaker Notes
Located in the northern region of South Tyrol (also known as Alto Adige), Lorenz Martini winery specialises in sparkling wines. The combination of a Mediterranean climate and high altitude creates vibrant, fresh wines with an unmistakeable aroma.
Made up of a mix of Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Nero grapes, their Comitissa 2017 is fermented for at least 3 years for a full-bodied and harmonious taste.
The Story
‘You’d be crazy not to find 30 mins to visit Lorenz Martini. I consider him to be doing the most interesting metodo classico sparkling wines of the Alto Adige right now’, says wine journalist and friend Dario Cappelloni to us on our way up to the Alto Adige. Sometimes, it’s literally just like that. Trust in a trusted palate - and then confirmation by our sommeliers and guests.
Lorenz was one of the kindest, most gentle winemakers we have ever met, and I could have mistaken his Comitissa 2017 Riserva for a Krug in a blind taste. So convinced, I said I have to buy a bottle and sneak it into a blind taste for Alessandro. Anyone who knows him well knows how fun it is to surprise him whether it’s with a great Canadian wine which our friends Tim and Faith always try to do or in a blind taste of a NY wine which Corkbuzz shocked him with and had him thinking we were drinking a French wine.
We bought all Lorenz could sell us. The wines were so elegant, refreshing and crisp… If you go to visit him, don’t leave without checking out his vintage cars and motorcycle from the 1930s!
