Winemaker Notes

Podere le Ripi's Brunello di Montalcino is produced with pure Sangiovese Grosso grapes, obtained from vineyards located in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the south-eastern side of the denomination, which rest on clayey-limestone soils. In the vineyard they try to limit treatments and to maintain high planting densities. In the cellar the spontaneous alcoholic fermentation is carried out in oak barrels with long macerations on the skins. Aging for 36 months in large oak barrels, 8 months in cement and further 12 months in the bottle.

The Story

This Brunello di Montalcino is a true thoroughbred, an exciting and austere portrait of one of the best Italian terroirs. Montalcino area has enjoyed an exponential growth in fame in recent decades, although not all local interpretations describe the area as authentically as Riccardo Illy's one. He's the owner of Podere le Ripi, and a sensitive connoisseur of that untouched heritage in the municipality of Castelnuovo dell'Abate. In the vineyard he works with passion, dedication and a constant eye on yields and planting density, so much so that we find ourselves in the presence of one of the densest vineyards in the world. Great concentration of fruit, but a style that never exaggerates this component, giving us intact, solid and powerful wines.
