Winemaker Notes

Certified organic. Calcareous and clayey soil rich in skeleton. The training system consists of espalier with a density of 5000 vines per hectare. Grapes are manually harvested in the first days of September. It ages for 12 months in steel tanks and another 12 months in the bottle.

The Story

Plantamura winery is located on a hilly area particularly suitable for the cultivation of Primitivo di Gioia del Colle: calcareous and clayey soil, altitude, temperature ranges and windy nature make it the ideal place for a quality, refined, totally organic production for this Primitivo 2019.

The owners Mariangela and Vincenzo, along with their two bright and talented daughters, are independent and proud winemakers. They personally take care of every stage of winemaking: from the vineyard to the bottling, always in full respect of tradition and the territory. Every gesture, every action has only one goal: to create a genuine and quality wine, the fruit of the vines and nothing else.

Born in 2002, the production philosophy has always been devoted to 100% organic cultivation with an annual production of about 50,000 bottles. Beyond that, this is another region heavily dominated by males and a philosophy of 'bigger is better' - from size of wineries to percentages of alcohol in the wines.

We loved this feminine approach they took with a sensitivity and sensibility to making a wine which is 13.5% in alcohol and not 19% (which many are), making this the ideal companion to food.

P.S...don't forget that Primitivo is the same grape as the Californian equivalent of Zinfandel. But the Primitivo wines which come from Puglia are usually far, far less of a fruit marmalade than their US equivalents. This Primitivo 2020 tends to be a bit more on the earthy side but is still laden with beautiful and bright fruit - and no cloying sweetness.
