Winemaker Notes

Vineyards planted at 650 meters above sea level on the slopes of Vesuvius on sandy soil of volcanic origin. After the manual harvest and soft pressing, the must is placed in 20 hl steel tanks momentarily and for final blending of 2 amphorea.

Fermentation is spontaneously triggered by indigenous yeasts alone. Final aging in amphora for 12 months. No fining, no filtration, no sulfites added for this unique InSumma wine.

The Story

Catalanesca grapes (only 6 winemakers work with this grape varietal and all are found in Somma) are obtained from a single ungrafted vineyard which rises at 650 meters above sea level.  The vineyard is around 80 years old.

Very low yields: maximum 5 bunches per plant to increase the concentration of aromas in each grape. Green manuring is practiced between the rows as a means of natural fertilization of the vineyard.

The InSumma wine represents a successful innovative oenological experiment, thanks to which a traditional grape such as Catalanesca has taken on a new identity.  This wine is exclusive to the Roscioli Wine Club.  To read the full story of our collaboration with Cantina Olivella, click HERE.
