Winemaker Notes
The Story
On the hills of Olevano Romano, a medieval village located south-east of Rome at 600 meters above sea level, stands Ciolli winery, founded in 2001 and today managed by Damiano Ciolli. 'Olevano' was derived from the words 'olio e vino'...it was a village based on the production of oil and wine from many, many centuries back.
The estate which has always been family-run, has vineyards planed in the 1950s from Damiano's grandfather. It has been based on a winemaking tradition that has lasted for at least four generations and, above all, hinges on the extraordinary quality of the Affile Cesanese grapes from its own vineyards.
The small size of the company, which counts a total of about seven hectares of vineyards, means that all details are meticulously taken care of, from the work between the rows to bottling - much of it painstakingly by Damiano and Letizia themselves.
The volcanic matrix of the soil combined with constant ventilation thanks to the winds coming from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea and a temperate climate allow the grapes to express unique characteristics.
This wine Silene derives it's name from a wild flower which grows in their vineyards - commonly called camion or catchfly. Silene is the feminine form of Silenus, a Greek woodland deity, and companion and tutor to Dionysus. In our opinion, this wine embodies the masculine qualities that Cesanese can give to a wine, with the floral and delicate sensitivities which Letizia, winemaker and wife to Damiano, brings to the wine. The embodiment of a beautiful marriage of two strong and sensitive winemakers.
